can we take a moment to think about how disturbing and frankly fucked up and wrong it is that Nemu and sex stuff is used for comic relief

like in the color bleach comics, the cell phone design

i have an essay i want to write properly about this and mayuri (& hm & ishida), but honestly it’s so grossly obvious that mayuri basically rapes her

and whether it’s because of that or because as some data book said she has all the same interests as him…. just

Yeah, I always found that weird. Their “relationship” is abusive on every level. But earlier on, it was clear we were supposed to be disgusted by it. Then it’s suddenly meant to be funny later. It’s as though Mayuri is now a crazy but ultimately harmless scientist instead of the abusive, self-centered guy who tortured people for the sake of his experiments.

YEAH THAT is basically it, this weird shift. I think I remember reading an interview where KT said he was able to make Mayuri’s stuff good in HM, but it rang very flat for me. I don’t hate him — I think he’s an interesting character and serves his role fabulously. But, I also can’t shake that one of our very first impressions of him was blowing up innocent Shinigami. Like,  we were so clearly meant to be upset by that, KT GAVE US A FEW PAGES FROM THE PERSPECTIVE OF ONE OF THE BOMBS. HE JUST WANTED SENPAI (HINAMORI) TO NOTICE HIM, LITERALLY, AND HE GOT BLOWN UP

so pretty much “It’s as though Mayuri is now a crazy but ultimately harmless scientist instead of the abusive, self-centered guy who tortured people for the sake of his experiments” is what I wanted/want to essay (though i guess if i did essay it’d basically be me posting panels and shrieking) on eventually cos like

it’s not OK to detail the extreme grotesque torture that the Quincy and specifically Ishida’s beloved grandfather experienced, then have Mayuri make stupid dismissive faces when Ishida complains about spy bacteria and ~lol human rights violations lol~

and it’s really not OK to heavily suggest rape then comically have sexual healing

I’m all for the laughs cause in a sense, the HM stuff was funny but at the same time disturbing given Mayuri’s character so I don’t know how to feel about it. I want to laugh at his obsession with experimenting and everyone’s reactions to him, at face value it kind of is, but at the same time not because everything Mayuri does, even for the sake of science and whatever purpose, is so morally wrong and gives hell to the people involved, like the Shinigami he carelessly killed and the Quincy matter. People who only watch the anime don’t get that inside look into one of the Shinigami killed so when I read that part in the manga, it made me hate Mayuri even more! Like what good captain would seriously do that to his own men??? Why does SS let him get away with it?? I suppose because Mayuri is smart, Urahara is exiled, and other reasons T_T As much as I like the funny stuff, it really does take away the seriousness of how creepy Mayuri really is .w.

I honestly like to think Mayuri will get his dues in the final arc, a QUINCY arc. It’d be pretty ironic to be punished by the very same race he mutilated. The things he did to the Quincies are completely unforgivable and I honestly doubt the Quincies are going to forget it. Uryuu hasn’t….he only lets him go because of Soul society and how he can benefit from him, like borrowing the arrancar bombs, though he hates doing it. Even the act of Mayuri killing thousands of souls doesn’t carry much weight it seems. It was brought up then quickly forgotten Yeah, it was with good reason in a way to keep the balance of the world and soon the invasion happened, but I doubt he gave much thought to another solution. Tbh, I don’t know what Kubo has in store for Mayuri……but I want to be hopeful that severity of Mayuri’s crimes will be addressed and dealt with this Quincy emphasis. 

I wish I had been able to find it funny, tho I think I’m in the minority |D. I’m just ~oversensitive~ I guess, esp as a wanky Ishida fan, but like… it felt less like being encouraged to laugh at reasonable reactions to Mayuri’s weirdness, and more laughing at those characters for being stupid and overreacting. I looooove making fun of Ishida, it is my absolute favorite thing to photoshop that silly DVD cover face onto terrible pictures or RP things constantly and ceaselessly smacking him in the face, but Ishida being the butt of the joke with MAYURI just felt sour. We’re supposed to laugh AT Ishida when, upon learning about the spy bacteria, he freaks out—Mayuri crosses his eyes, ignores him, so Ishida freaks more, such that Renji has to tell him to be calm down cos dude your stomach’s dust lol. lol it’s funny when Ishida squawks about stuff. We’re supposed to laugh when Renji and Ishida blush and react so strongly to the implied sexual healing that goes on between Mayuri and Nemu, and I guess that’s more clearly an instance of loling at Mayuri’s weirdness, but with everything else, it’s just gross!!

That’s without even addressing the really gross treatment of Nemu for all of those chapters. 

I mean, I do think Mayuri still came off as reasonably creepy and not necessarily a HEROIC figure, as he is disturbing and later threatened Ichigo, and of course recently we had the blip re: all those killed people in Rukongai. But, because he was facing the enemy, he was necessarily the person we were supposed to root for in HM, and when KT gets bored he draws comedic relief, resulting in… that. Only, Mayuri’s a monster so the comedy just feels weird. I think the novels suggested Mayuri was pulled in front of the Central 46 or whatever for the bombing? But, I’m not sure that counts as canon, thus it remains unresolved in manga canon. 

I’m sometimes hopeful about Mayuri getting his this arc, but as KT likes him so much, I’m skeptical, too. I think I’ll just be happy for now if it’s acknowledged that Mayuri did those things, by one of the Quincy (ideally Ryuuken but not holding my breath for THAT). Really, I’m afraid that even if he does get his, Nemu will go out with him in some kind of pre-programmed self-detonation sort of thing. I sometimes think KT dropped the ball on her potential wrt Mayuri, and as such that is what she’d be reduced to.
