I have a hard time believing that people who have been reading Bleach for years, who have seen Ishida come through for his friends over and over, who watched him lose a limb on the Dome and keep fighting with his off-hand, who watched him walk up to a blood-thirsty monster and take it by the hand because he knew his friend was somewhere under that mask and that friend would never forgive himself for what he was about to do, that these same readers now somehow think that Uryuu would really honestly betray these same friends and his grandfather’s teaching for… what exactly?
Bleach readers, if you think Uryuu is truly a traitor, please engage your brains before you embarrass yourselves further.
Yes, we’ve just seen Uryuu welcomed into the ranks of the Vandenreich. By the guy who killed his mother.
At this point I’m not going to debate whether he’s actually been brainwashed/re-educated, is playing the double agent in order to learn their weaknesses for Urahara, or is pretending to join them in order to effect his own vengeance for his mother’s death. Any of those options is 100% more likely than Ishida being an out-and-out traitor.

The way events resolved themselves likely made the prospect of a relationship between the couples/families too awkward.
Ryuuken surely had regrets for not stepping in and saving Masaki from the Hollow bite, and then there’s the whole “what could have been aspect” that isn’t real conducive to lively dinner conversation. Plus, Masaki’s infection & departure represented a huge blow to the Ishida clan; one they probably didn’t want to be reminded of.
Masaki went off to uni, started dating Isshin, and they made their own life for themselves. Small clinic doctor and Karakura General surgeon/president probably moved in different circles too.
I do wonder though just when Ryuuken gave up the Quincy stuff. Now that we know Katagiri was frail, I doubt he’d have let her go out and “sortie” even if a Shinigami got killed. And if Ryuuken ever went out to take care of Hollows I wonder if he ever ran into Masaki? You know she probably would have waved at him.
We still don’t know the whole story of what happened to the Ishidas so maybe there’s more to tell, but just given what we know, and with Ryuuken being Ryuuken, it was probably easier for everyone to just live their own lives.
Ahhhh, all good points. While it’s sad to think of Ryuuken maintaining absolutely no contact (last Quincy! friendly enough!), he did kick her out in order to “definitively part” with her. Awkward dinnertime conversation indeed.
I do wonder just what Katagiri’s condition was, and for how long. Plus, we don’t know how Ryuuken’s mother died and under what circumstances. Just what caused his animosity toward Souken? It could easily be his failure to be there, but he seems to have his distaste for the Quincy and then a separate disdain for Souken… but that may be reading too much into it, and it may be a culmination of never being there + Souken pushing the Quincy stuff onto his son while knowing Ryuuken opposed it. That’d be more than enough for “that old man.”
Still, it’s such a shame ):

OBVIOUSLY I AM EXTREMELY BIASED but opei was gross and fabulous and yhwach is fascinating and i am kind of confused by my bizarre attraction to him because his mustache is so gross
I am so curious as to how Yhwach will tell his side, and whether or not they’ll have be given anything sympathetic. They’ve been portrayed thus far as completely evil, and you can’t really argue it — indirectly killing mothers, intense Nazi parallels in HM, slaughtering Soul Society, re-education — even if Uryuu didn’t get it, I bet Quincar like Ivan did.
At the same time, at the very start almost, we had our rookie kiddo ask whether the Shinigami had been right in what they did to the Quincy, and even the dude who yelled at (and was killed by) Haschwald admitting that he wasn’t sure.
(and even though I’m sadly now convinced Mayuri won’t meet a fitting end, I do think his bribing Shinigami to show up late, ensuring Quincy death so he could do things like “make father burn son alive,” is arguably worse than what Yhwach did. I say arguably because, yeah taking powers =/= death, but such a dismissive attitude toward his OWN PEOPLE is souring. Yamamoto hinted at it, but at the same time, Yhwach was surprisingly soft with the guy who died impersonating him).

Re: Uryuu… I’d lean double agent, except for that word.
“The subject” for me possibly implied he was “reeducated.” I’d like to see other translations and that’s obviously jumping the gun pretty far. I acknowledge that I am reading a lot into “the subject.”
…Echoing what I said on DB, I can see either of these options (I don’t care for the idea of him really siding with Ywach, it’s too unlikely and doesn’t look good on the nakama friendships after all that’s happened).
But if Kubo goes the re-education/brainwashing route I hope he has a fresh take on it since the - being forced to fight your friends or family - has happened a few times.
Maybe Uryuu went to Ywach with the intentions of playing double agent but was re-educated for real (because why would Ryuuken let him be taken if he knew). I would say Uryuu’s usually too well-prepared to walk into something like that, but even with his smarts and meticulous planning, Ywach could’ve over-powered him. He seems to have a scary amount of control over the Quincy.
Yeah, honestly, I think it’s just this side of impossible that Uryuu would really side with Yhwach. As I said there as well, he may not necessarily know that Souken opposed the methods of these Quincy, or that Yhwach was responsible for his mother’s death, but a) he’s worked with Shinigami and Hollows, and b) these guys have been doing terrible things in Hueco Mundo and Soul Society. Uryuu would never join people like that. Though, we don’t know what crazy Quincy speeches may’ve been given… it’s also very unlikely that his friends would DOUBT him like that, after all they’ve been through together.
Thanks to Tsukishima, Uryuu, more than the other humans, has been the most reliable. He tried to stop Ichigo above the dome. He was on Ichigo’s side during FB.
You’re right— thanks to FB, we’ve seen friends turning on Ichigo, so hopefully KT makes this more interesting if it is re-education.
But, yeah, Uryuu’s very well-prepared… but Yhwach is a guy who can apparently take your powers at WILL. It’d be child’s play to overpower Uryuu. I could also see him going with those intentions then being forced into re-education, but I also think that if so, there’s some chance that was anticipated. Who knows whether anyone actually had access to anyone who’d undergone something similar,and thus would know how to counteract it. lol maybe that’s his job.
