“The subject” for me possibly implied he was “reeducated.” I’d like to see other translations and that’s obviously jumping the gun pretty far. I acknowledge that I am reading a lot into “the subject.”
…Echoing what I said on DB, I can see either of these options (I don’t care for the idea of him really siding with Ywach, it’s too unlikely and doesn’t look good on the nakama friendships after all that’s happened).
But if Kubo goes the re-education/brainwashing route I hope he has a fresh take on it since the - being forced to fight your friends or family - has happened a few times.
Maybe Uryuu went to Ywach with the intentions of playing double agent but was re-educated for real (because why would Ryuuken let him be taken if he knew). I would say Uryuu’s usually too well-prepared to walk into something like that, but even with his smarts and meticulous planning, Ywach could’ve over-powered him. He seems to have a scary amount of control over the Quincy.
Yeah, honestly, I think it’s just this side of impossible that Uryuu would really side with Yhwach. As I said there as well, he may not necessarily know that Souken opposed the methods of these Quincy, or that Yhwach was responsible for his mother’s death, but a) he’s worked with Shinigami and Hollows, and b) these guys have been doing terrible things in Hueco Mundo and Soul Society. Uryuu would never join people like that. Though, we don’t know what crazy Quincy speeches may’ve been given… it’s also very unlikely that his friends would DOUBT him like that, after all they’ve been through together.
Thanks to Tsukishima, Uryuu, more than the other humans, has been the most reliable. He tried to stop Ichigo above the dome. He was on Ichigo’s side during FB.
You’re right— thanks to FB, we’ve seen friends turning on Ichigo, so hopefully KT makes this more interesting if it is re-education.
But, yeah, Uryuu’s very well-prepared… but Yhwach is a guy who can apparently take your powers at WILL. It’d be child’s play to overpower Uryuu. I could also see him going with those intentions then being forced into re-education, but I also think that if so, there’s some chance that was anticipated. Who knows whether anyone actually had access to anyone who’d undergone something similar,and thus would know how to counteract it. lol maybe that’s his job.

I REALLY WANT TO BELIEVE THAT. I could see Urahara or Ryuuken having expected this and given him something to either resist brainwashing or come back to himself at a certain point (maybe when he looks in the mirror and sees all those buttons, lol). We’ve had Ishida and Urahara linked — Ishida just worked for him for over a year.
We also have his weird behavior at the start of the arc. His refusal that made no sense, really. (Did Ichigo ever tell him that Ivan used a Quincy cross?) Was he reeducated then, or planning something with Urahara, who happened to show up at that moment? (I mean obviously to get them into HM but also before they could talk MORE ABOUT WHY he wasn’t going.)
That said, I could also see KT wanting to milk a big dramatic COME BACK TO ME—ER YOURSELF battle, so I don’t want to get my hopes up for the former!

exhibit a: you have the basic hero with tsundere complex (over the heroine, most of the time) and a complicated past (angstangstangstangst).
exhibit b: the typical playful, strong-willed heroine. one of her prime directives throughout the series is to pull the hero out of the constant funks he falls prey to (mostly when she goes away for a while). and be supreme badass 100% of the time.
exhibit c: the ‘beauty queen who harbours one-sided love over the hero’ stereotype. thankfully in orihime’s case, she’s doesn’t fall into the ‘scheming bitch’ category because she’s made of concentrated angeldust.
and to round it up,
exhibit d: the pseudo-antisocial bookish type who secretly adores the beauty queen (but is forever friendzoned because everyone thinks he’s gay)
